Relay for life

The annual Cancer Society "Relay for Life" event was held on Saturday, at Frank Kitts Park down on the waterfront. Teams of ten or more camp out overnight and take part in a walking or running fundraising relay while enjoying a carnival atmosphere. People of all ages participate, and from a complete cross section of the community.

The Relay started with an opening ceremony at 3-30 pm where the guest speaker was Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, a breast cancer survivor and until recently, MP for Porirua. Winnie retired from politics last year to take up a post as Assistant Vice Chancellor Pasifika at Victoria University of Wellington.

She was supported on stage and in the subsequent "lead the walk" event, by Helene Ritchie, a local City Councillor and me, both of us cancer "survivors' and therefor honoured by beaing allowed to wear the red sash. Sitting on stage in the yellow was Deputy Mayor (and VUW Chancellor) Ian McKinnon.

The subsequent pictures show us carrying the banner at the head of the walkers and runners, and lead by a Latin American batucada drum team. I got completely caught up in the pleasure of being among the "comrades" and danced along in the front to the rhythm of the drums.
